I was asked to write a piece for a book on being a working Mum which was quite apt as I have just had to take the week off to sit with my poorly little girl. I was limited to 400 words and this is what I wrote 🙂
So being a working mum is a constant juggle and even more so when you are the boss. I am one of those people who desperately believes that anything is possible and because I believed that it was possible to run a big business around the short school hours I have cracked on and made it happen. My business turns over 6 figures but it is run by part time mums. We have it so we are very flexible about how we work and our babies come first every step of the way. I believe you need to adopt a totally different approach when you are a mum in business that you may be used to in a corporate environment. Trying to work the same long hours, adhere to the rules set by those expectations on us simply add to our stress and the more stress we have on our shoulders as a mum then the more stress our Children experience. I feel so lucky to be able to work 3 days a week with a few hours on a Monday afternoon too. I am able to work like this as I have LOTS of automation and systems set up in my business so I know that when I am not there everything is still being answered and sorted and that a task that may normally take 4 hours can be done in 30 mins with the use of clever tools. The key is learning how to boost your productivity and also learning to try and switch off in between working times so when you do work you will be at your best. You need to plan your time clearly so when you sit down to work you know exactly what you need to do. Often we can find ourselves in overwhelm and this is when we loose the little time we do have and become stressed. By investing in the right technology, creating systems and starting to outsource the bits which are not playing to your strengths you are able to build as big a business as someone dedicating 6 days a week to something. In this day and age it is not about working harder, it is about working smarter.
But really the key here is that you are in control. It took me MANY years to fully understand that as the Boss I set the rules about EVERYTHING. Just because they do things a certain way in the corporate world it does not make it right. The key is to listen to your heart and commit to building your business YOUR way and in a way that works for you and your family. Also to be clever and make sure you have systems which can carry the strain for you. Thought I would share this here too before the book gets published 🙂
